Text
Lorem Ipsum Generator
A realistic word distribution rather than one sentence repeated, so line lengths in your mock-up behave the way real copy will.
How to use it
- Set how many paragraphs you need.
- Leave the classic opening ticked if you want the familiar first line.
- Copy as plain text for a design tool, or as HTML for a CMS.
Why designers use meaningless text
If placeholder copy is readable, reviewers read it instead of looking at the layout. Latin filler is instantly recognisable as filler, so attention stays on spacing, line length and hierarchy — the things actually being reviewed at that stage. The text is designed to be looked past, not read.
Where the words come from
The standard passage is a scrambled excerpt of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. It has been the printing trade's dummy text since the 1500s, when typesetters needed something to fill a specimen page. The version most software generates is not authentic Latin: words are truncated and recombined, which is why it reads oddly even to someone who knows the language.
Picking a length that tells the truth about the layout
Placeholder text is only useful if its length is realistic. A hero headline is 6–10 words; a card summary is 20–30; a product description is 80–120; a blog intro is 150 or more. Drop 500 words into a card and the layout will look correct while collapsing the moment real copy arrives.
Test the extremes deliberately: the longest plausible headline and the shortest. If the design survives a two-word title and a twelve-word one, it is genuinely flexible. Most layouts break at the short end, not the long one, because there is nothing to fill the space.
Frequently asked questions
Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text?
It has a realistic mix of word lengths but no meaning, so reviewers comment on layout instead of reading the copy.
Where does the text come from?
A scrambled passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, used as filler by printers since the 1500s.
Should I ship lorem ipsum to production?
No. Search engines can index it and it looks unfinished. Treat it purely as a layout placeholder.
Is the generated text real Latin?
Only partly. The opening words are authentic Cicero; the rest is recombined fragments, which is why it does not translate.
Should the final copy be written in lorem ipsum?
Never. Placeholder text hides the most common layout failure — a design that only works with short, meaningless words.
